Blackmagic Design is on a roll!
A brief history:
– BMD acquires DaVinci, turns $250k DaVinci 2k system into $999 DaVinci Resolve for Mac and $30k Resolve for Linux
– BMD acquires Teranex, drops price from $80k to $20k. Then releases redesigned models for $2k and $4k including 3D and Thunderbolt support
– BMD acquires Cintel and…
turns the diTTo Evolution into a $999 4k film scanner? That can be controlled by my $999 Resolve station?
That would be awesome! Now the wait begins.
For some perspective, BMD acquired Teranex late last fall and announced the price cut shortly thereafter. The new $2k and $4k models were announced at NAB and began shipping this summer. Which is incredibly fast for a brand new product. So if BMD is going to shake up Cintel using the same time frame, we’re looking at 6-9 months before major announcements, IMHO. Cintel also has a large portfolio of scanners, image enhancers and telecine control equipment. BMD could be building an ecosystem around DaVinci Resolve, adding more image enhancement tools and hardware integration similar to DaVinci 2k, but all owned and designed by BMD instead of third parties. Just like the BMD Decklink cards, Resolve might only work with scanners from Cintel. Interesting.
