Finished watching this film for the first time a few minutes ago. There is just too much to say about it. It's beautiful. It's outstanding. It's jaw droppingly gorgeous. The colour is fantastic. The editing is done to a T. The snowboarding itself is phenomenal. I can't explain how inspirational this film was to me! As someone that loves extreme sports as well as being a digital media student at university, seeing The Art of Flight just blew my mind (thankfully not literally!). Equally as surprised that this post had zero likes or comments.

I truly can't express my admiration for this film.

THANK YOU!

I couldn't agree more, especially with the B&W pics. It's just natural that we value things that are rarer. 100 pictures of my Grandma's entire life hold more value than the 100 pics I fired off of my niece last week. I believe one of the great things about digital photography is the immediate feedback that allows you to learn faster. There's never been a better time to take up SLR photography as the learning curve is much easier than it used to be. But at the same time you need to learn how to use the delete button.

I'm in a similar thought confliction: get rid of my dvds and blus in place of downloads.
But while I've done this for music and I don't miss it at all, I do like physical movies, and books. ebooks are just so clinical and emotionless.

The other problem come of remembering all these. I guess most don't store everything they consume/read/watch, so how do we look back and see what we've enjoyed? Amazon likes? Facebook likes/posts? Photos of items? I'm using ReadItLater to index recent stuff I've seen/read, but it's not ideal.

For my generation - or most alive today - I think physical items still hold value, especially in media senses; I've a collection of some 100 b&w photos of my family history, right back through the generations. These hold more value and are intensely more interesting and connecting on a human level than digital pics we take 1000s of each year now.

I feel sad for people who'll never hold a dvd/blu-ray etc, but perhaps they're luck they don't know any better.

Thanks Tate, and I think that's part of Ken Rockwell's argument for film. So you can't really do a direct cost comparison because film is treated differently.

After reading this post again, I think I just convinced myself to sell all my guitars and buy a 335 with split pickups. I never thought of that before until I wrote this article.

I always use the Sniper analogy. Basically, a digital SLR is like a AK47. Any idiot can run around and pop off a 50 rounds a second and never hit the mark. A film is like a sniper knows the one shot that needs to be taken. they patiently wait for it. They triple check all of the elements and their equipment is 100% on point and they know it inside and out. It only takes one bullet, just like it only takes one frame. That's the best lesson i've learned from the Holga. Accept, with the Holga you can shoot yourself in the foot and you're a freaking artist, so... maybe that analogy is a little off.
