Gotta Keep Those RAIDs Clean

There's a whole family of dust bunnies in there!

There's a whole family of dust bunnies in there

I spent the weekend over at TGR to give their Xsan system its semi-annual cleaning. Us IT guys gotta work weekends while you office people are out playing. A little disc defragging here, a little blast of air there. The biggest step is removing all the components from the Xserve RAIDs and rolling the entire server rack outside to blow it out. If you’ve ever wondered why IT departments have entire air conditioned rooms (and buildings) for rack-mounted servers, this is why. It’s not just about keeping them cool. In fact, most household computers look worse than this because they usually sit on the floor so Fluffy can curl up next to the warm case.

Everything in order. Wait, there's one missing!
