My buddy Trey sent me an email saying he just got a new Canon 7D, but wanted to test it against his Sony EX1 with a Letus Elite 35mm adapter. He asked if I could give him a hand. I said sure, but let’s make it interesting. I emailed a few friends in the valley and put together the following:
Canon 5D MkII
Canon 7D
Sony EX1 with Letus Elite
Panasonic HVX200 with Letus Extreme
Panasonic AJ-HPX3700 Varicam
RED One
Vision Research Phantom HD Gold
Now we got a group worthy of some testing. Some may look at this list and wonder why anyone would ever compare a 7D to a Phantom. Or why we would compare a digital cinema camera like the RED One to a more traditional 2/3″ camera like the Varicam. But the truth is that every single one of these cameras is used everyday in productions big and small. Some cameras like the HVX200 are considered old standards, while new technologies like the 7D are making DPs and producers rethink, well, everything. There’s also quite a bit of overlap between these cameras. Sometimes in price, sometimes in look, but also in their use of lenses. The fact that you can put the same glass on a Canon still camera, a RED One and an EX1, says to me they should be compared.
Stay tuned.
I have been editing a lot of stuff shot on the 7D recently. Can’t wait for this Eric! Good stuff!
